Complex Projects

Of course standard project management practices will also apply here (see Leven en Werken met projecten). In addition this book focuses on the start processes and the results on project results, introducing new project phases.

The main essence here is respect and actual involvement of stakeholders. Involvement means real participation in the project decision process! The following steps are taken:

  • Selection of potential stakeholders, including those that are against the initial project objectives.

  • Selection of those that can exert influence/power during the project developments

  • Visit and interview these stakeholders and select those with knowledge and experience, not hose with status or hierarchical power; for further participation.

  • See to it that participants are authorized (mandated), not just responsible, for their contribution in the project decision process.

Based on interview results a 2½ to 5 day programme is made including all project decisions to be made. The results are decisions, not proposals. The sessions are based on negotiation, not on directives. The mandated participants become convinced that the project success is equal to their own success. The project should win, not a certain powerful stakeholder.

The sessions end by inviting managers and directors to get informed and tell them what they will have to contribute to the project success. If not, the project is cancelled.

Results of this approache are astonishing. Decrease in budgets and lead-times of 30 to 60% with maintaining project performance (quality) are achieved!
